Postgres plus auth, storage, and realtime — the open Firebase.
Supabase gives every project a full Postgres database and layers commonly needed backend services on top of it: authentication with Row Level Security, auto-generated REST APIs, Edge Functions, file storage, realtime data sync, and vector embedding support for AI workloads. You can use one product or all of them, and manage everything from a dashboard with a table editor, SQL editor, and RLS policy tools. It's open source (the GitHub repo shows over 111K stars) and the database is portable, so you're not locked into a proprietary data format. Client libraries exist for frameworks like React and Flutter, and the site offers starter templates including a Stripe subscriptions kit, a Next.js app with cookie-based auth, an AI chatbot template, and a LangChain starter.
SQLite for production — distributed and edge-ready.
Turso is a database platform built on SQLite, designed around running many small isolated databases instead of one large shared one. You can programmatically spin up a database per user, AI agent, or tenant — the site cites customers running over 2 million databases. It ships as an open-source engine you can run locally or on your own servers, plus Turso Cloud, a managed service with provisioning, replication, observability, bring-your-own-cloud deployment on AWS, and per-database encryption with customer-held keys. SDKs are available in TypeScript, Python, Rust, and Go, and embedded replication lets the same database run on a user's device and sync with the cloud for local-first and offline-capable apps. In 2025, Turso announced it is joining Supabase.
