DigitalOcean vs MongoDB Atlas

DigitalOcean vs MongoDB Atlas — two databases & Backend tools on Founderkit, side by side.

DigitalOcean

AI-native cloud for building and scaling intelligent applications

DigitalOcean provides an integrated cloud platform for AI products, offering compute, managed databases, storage, and specialized AI services like inference engines and managed agents.

MongoDB Atlas

Managed MongoDB in the cloud.

MongoDB Atlas is MongoDB's managed cloud database service. It runs the MongoDB document database across multiple cloud providers and handles the operational side — deployment, scaling, backups, and monitoring — so you don't manage servers yourself. The Atlas platform includes more than just the core database. It ships with Atlas Search for full-text search, Atlas Vector Search for building AI applications with embeddings, Voyage AI for embedding and reranking models, and the Atlas Agent Engine for building and deploying AI agents. If you'd rather self-host, MongoDB also offers Enterprise Advanced for your own infrastructure and a free Community Edition for local development. Atlas supports a free tier to get started, and the current release is MongoDB 9.0, which the company says delivers up to 2x higher throughput. The database is used across use cases like AI applications, payments, gaming, serverless development, and edge/mobile apps, and industries including financial services, healthcare, and telecom.
